Berebitsky Portrait fund
Hayley Shelton is not only the founder of PACS, she is also an Alumna of Sewanee: The University of the South. Recently, Hayley and PACS have partnered with the Women of Sewanee in efforts to pay homage to a beloved professor, mentor, colleague and friend.
Dr. Julie Berebitsy, Jesse Ball DuPont professor of history & Founder/Former Chair of the Women’s Studies program will be retiring due to a degenerative brain condition. We are both devastated and determined to honor her legacy at Sewanee. Dr. Berebitsky has been instrumental in educating Sewanee women (and men!) on the history, philosophy, perils and successes of feminism and women’s empowerment. (For more on Dr. Berebitsky’s work at Sewanee, click here.) Even those of us who weren’t lucky enough to study with Dr. Berebitsky recognize that her groundbreaking service has earned her a place of honor among pioneering Sewanee women -- including Mary Sue Cushman, Anita Goodstein and others.
Together, we can raise enough to pay the full $10,000 to $15,000 that the University estimates it will cost to commission an oil portrait of Dr. Berebitsky for the halls of Sewanee.
You can easily make a tax-deductible contribution -- $10, $25, $100, $500 or even more -- just click on the “Donate” and note that your contribution is for the Berebitsky Portrait Fund.
With your help, at the reception honoring Dr. Berebitsky on Friday Nov. 1, we will proudly announce that Sewanee women are fully funding an oil portrait honoring her for placement at the University. We can’t think of a better way to kick off the 50 Years of Women at Sewanee celebration. And we’re on our way: as of Monday Oct. 7, we’re halfway to our $15,000 goal. If all of us join together with what each of us can afford, we will make a strong statement about the power of Sewanee women!
There’s more exciting news: any money collected beyond the cost of Dr. Berebitsky’s portrait will go toward a permanent portrait and scholarship fund dedicated to honoring other groundbreaking women professors and influencers at Sewanee. Just think what that can mean: portraits of trailblazing women will inspire every future generation at Sewanee.
